Water-filter marketing runs on fear. Every product page wants you to picture lead leaching from your pipes, “forever chemicals” in every glass, and a dozen contaminants with frightening names: right above an Add to Cart button. Some of that concern is legitimate. Most of it is a sales technique. So we did the boring thing: pulled the actual NSF certifications and read independent testing, and tried to separate what a given filter genuinely removes from what the box implies it removes.

Here’s the part that’s genuinely settled. A water filter only removes what it’s certified to remove. The relevant standards are boring but decisive: NSF/ANSI 42 covers chlorine, taste and odor. The “makes water taste better” tier. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related contaminants like lead and certain VOCs. NSF/ANSI 401 covers “emerging” contaminants and certain pharmaceuticals. NSF/ANSI 58 is reverse osmosis. A basic pitcher certified only to 42 makes your water taste better; it does essentially nothing for lead. That distinction (not the brand, not the price) is what actually determines whether a filter protects you.

After that, the fear-mongering creeps back in. PFAS, microplastics, “total contaminants removed”. These matter enormously to some households and barely at all to others, depending entirely on what’s actually in your tap water. We’re not going to pretend an RO system is wasted money. We’re going to tell you exactly what each type buys, so you can match the filter to your real water instead of to an ad.

The Verdict

Match the filter to what’s actually in your water, not to the scariest ad.

If your water is safe but tastes of chlorine, the most common situation, you do not need a $250 system. A Brita Elite pitcher (around $35) or a faucet-mount PUR Plus (around $30) handles taste and chlorine cheaply. The Brita Elite also carries a lead certification the standard Brita doesn’t, so check which cartridge you’re actually buying.

If you’re targeting lead or PFAS specifically (older home, known pipe issues, industrial area) step up to a filter certified for it. The Clearly Filtered pitcher and the Aquasana under-sink are certified against a long contaminant list including lead and PFAS, and the APEC reverse-osmosis system removes essentially everything if your problem is severe or you’re on a well.

And the most important step isn’t buying anything: read your water report first. Your utility’s Consumer Confidence Report and the EWG database tell you what’s actually in your tap. Buy the cheapest filter certified for your specific problem, not the one whose ad scared you most.

The four questions worth understanding

Strip away the fear marketing and water-filter choice comes down to four real questions.

1. What’s actually in your water: the only question that comes first. Every other decision depends on this one. Pull your utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (mailed or online) and look up your ZIP in the EWG tap-water database. If the answer is “safe, just chlorine-y,” you’re shopping for taste. If it’s lead or PFAS, you’re shopping for a specific certification. Buying before you know this is how people overspend.

2. Certification: the difference between protection and theater. A filter removes what it’s tested and certified to remove, full stop. NSF/ANSI 42 = taste and chlorine. 53 = lead and health contaminants. 401 = emerging contaminants and some pharmaceuticals. 58 = reverse osmosis. “Reduces up to 99% of contaminants” with no standard named is a marketing sentence, not a guarantee. Look for the actual standard number and the specific contaminant claimed.

3. Type. Convenience vs thoroughness, with cost attached. Pitchers are cheapest and simplest but slow and limited. Faucet-mounts filter on demand at the tap. Under-sink units are higher-capacity and out of sight but need installation. Gravity systems (Berkey-style) need no plumbing and suit off-grid use. RO is the most thorough and the most involved. None is “best”: each trades convenience, capacity and contaminant range differently.

4. Replacement cartridges. The cost everyone forgets until they own it. The device is a one-time cost; the cartridges are forever. A pitcher that needs a new filter every two months can cost more per year than a pricier system with six-month cartridges. ZeroWater removes more but its filters exhaust fast in hard water, spiking the running cost. Always price the cartridges, not just the unit. It’s the number that actually decides what’s expensive.

So is “everyone needs a water filter” true? Mostly no, in the safety sense, and we’ll say it plainly rather than hedge. Most US municipal water already meets federal safety standards, so for many households a filter is a taste upgrade, not a health necessity. But it’s a real necessity for specific situations: lead service lines, PFAS hot-spots, private wells, immunocompromised households. The claim is half-true; the universal urgency the ads attach to it usually isn’t.
