Home EV charger install checklist: what to check before you buy

A 48A charger on a 40A circuit is just an expensive 32A charger. Charging speed is set by the slowest link in the chain, and most people buy headroom their car and panel can't even accept. Run this page before you shop, not after the box arrives.

The short version

For a typical driver, a well-built 40A Level 2 charger on a properly-sized circuit captures essentially all the benefit there is. Check your car's max charge rate and your panel's capacity first. Those two numbers, not the box's biggest amp figure, decide what you should buy.

What actually matters

1Speed is capped three times. By the slowest link

Your charging speed is limited by the charger, your car's onboard charger, and your home circuit: whichever is smallest wins. A 48A unit needs a 60A breaker and a car that accepts 48A; many EVs top out at 32–40A. Amps you can't use are just spent money.

2The jump that actually matters: Level 1 → Level 2

That single step is the difference between "never quite topped up" and "full every morning." Everything past Level 2 is fine-tuning.

340A is the sweet spot for most drivers

Overnight, 40A already refills far more than a typical 30–40 mi/day driver uses. 48A is for two-EV households or very long commutes. Past ~40A the real-world gains diminish fast. You're paying for headroom you'll rarely touch.

4Plug-in vs hardwired is an install choice, not a quality one

A NEMA 14-50 plug-in unit is portable and DIY-friendly but capped at 40A continuous by code. Hardwiring raises the cap to 48A and is often required outdoors. At the same amps they charge identically. Pick based on your install needs, not a "premium" label.

5The one smart feature worth paying for: off-peak scheduling

On a time-of-use electric plan, charging at 1am instead of 6pm can roughly halve the bill. App dashboards and Wi-Fi are gravy. If your utility has no off-peak rate, a "dumb" charger costs you nothing extra. Don't pay for features you can't use.

6First step is your panel, not the reviews

Check your breaker size and available capacity before you shop. People spend a weekend reading charger reviews, then discover their panel can't feed the unit they bought. A circuit upgrade (or a panel upgrade) can cost more than the charger: know that number first.

The honest bottom line: a 40A Level 2 charger on a properly-sized circuit is the right answer for most homes. The 48A units are headroom most people never touch, and only worth it if your panel and your car can actually feed them.
